A relationship, not a building
A local assembly meets in a place, but the Body of Christ is the spiritual union of believers with the Lord Jesus Christ. Ephesians 1:22–23 KJB identifies Him as Head and the church as His Body. The distinction keeps membership in an organization from being confused with salvation.
For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.
The one Body and the mystery
Ephesians 3:6 KJB describes believing Gentiles as fellowheirs, of the same Body, and partakers of His promise in Christ by the gospel. The basis of their standing is Christ. Social status and national heritage do not establish a higher class of believer within that Body.
14 For he is our peace, who hath made both one, and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us;
15 Having abolished in his flesh the enmity, even the law of commandments contained in ordinances; for to make in himself of twain one new man, so making peace;
16 And that he might reconcile both unto God in one body by the cross, having slain the enmity thereby:
The baptism that places the believer into Christ
In 1 Corinthians 12:13 KJB, the agent is the Spirit and the result is union in one Body. Mid-Acts teaching distinguishes this divine identification from the water baptism associated with the kingdom ministry. Read Romans 6:3–4 KJB and Colossians 2:11–13 KJB with this spiritual relationship in view.
Water baptism does not pay for sin or complete justification. This site follows the Mid-Acts position that the church’s one baptism is the Spirit’s placement of the believer into Christ. Study 1 Corinthians 1:14–17 KJB and Ephesians 4:4–6 KJB alongside the accounts in Acts, respecting their historical settings.
Position and daily conduct
And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.
The very people sealed unto the day of redemption are told not to grieve the Holy Spirit. Secure standing is not permission for careless conduct. Ephesians 4 KJB addresses honesty, work, speech, kindness, and forgiveness. Learn who you are in Christ, then let that truth shape your walk.
Unity also does not mean doctrine is unimportant. Ephesians 4:11–16 KJB connects growth and unity with being established in the truth rather than carried about by every wind of doctrine. Fellowship should strengthen understanding, service, and love.
The purpose of ministry
The ministry of reconciliation in 2 Corinthians 5:18–21 KJB presents Christ to the lost. The edification of the saints helps believers grow into mature service. These responsibilities belong together: clear evangelism, faithful Bible study, and practical care for one another.
20 Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us: we pray you in Christ’s stead, be ye reconciled to God.
21 For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.
