Prophecy and mystery

Compare what was spoken since the world began with what was kept secret since the world began.

Two statements worth comparing

Acts 3:20-21 KJB

20 And he shall send Jesus Christ, which before was preached unto you:

21 Whom the heaven must receive until the times of restitution of all things, which God hath spoken by the mouth of all his holy prophets since the world began.

Romans 16:25-27 KJB

25 Now to him that is of power to stablish you according to my gospel, and the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery, which was kept secret since the world began,

26 But now is made manifest, and by the scriptures of the prophets, according to the commandment of the everlasting God, made known to all nations for the obedience of faith:

27 To God only wise, be glory through Jesus Christ for ever. Amen.

Peter speaks about restitution foretold by the prophets since the world began. Paul speaks about a mystery kept secret since the world began and now manifested. Mid-Acts interpretation takes these descriptions seriously: it distinguishes the prophetic kingdom purpose from the revealed mystery concerning the Body of Christ.

One Lord, distinct revealed responsibilities

A distinction in administration is not a division in God’s character. Nor does it create competing Saviours. The Lord Jesus Christ is central to both God’s promises and His revealed mystery. Ephesians 1:10 KJB describes the gathering together of all things in Christ, both in heaven and on earth.

Avoid making the comparison absolute in ways the verses do not support. Israel’s blessings include spiritual realities; believers in the Body still live earthly lives. The comparison concerns the stated programs, relationships, commissions, and hopes—not a claim that one group knows only physical things and the other has no bodily existence.

The cross: foretold suffering, revealed purpose

Isaiah 53 KJB speaks of the suffering servant. Luke 24:25–27 KJB explains prophetic testimony concerning Christ. Yet Paul also describes hidden wisdom in 1 Corinthians 2:7–8 KJB. Study the prophetic testimony to Christ’s suffering alongside the later explanation of what God accomplished through the cross in forming one Body.

This is why “according to the scriptures” in 1 Corinthians 15:3–4 KJB and “kept secret” in Romans 16:25 KJB need not be treated as contradictory. The events have scriptural testimony; the mystery concerns a purpose and revelation God made known in His appointed administration.

Do not cancel the promises

Romans 11 KJB must be read with the comparison. Paul speaks of Israel’s blindness in part, then of God’s faithfulness. The Body of Christ’s present calling does not require declaring God’s promises to Israel meaningless. Read Romans 11:25–29 KJB and distinguish an interruption in the prophetic program from the cancellation of God’s word.
